Heritage Scrapbook Layout – Grandparents

I have used a page from the Lace & Linen DCWV stack again to scrap these photos. I will give some explanations and products used below the photos.

Grandparents Layout - Full page

Grandparents Layout – Full page

This is one of my favourite pictures of my grandmother discovered after a visit to look at photos that my aunt had in an album. I was so grateful that she allowed me to photograph whichever photo I wanted which turned out to be almost all of them. I also discovered the one of my grandparents together on their wedding day and this made me wonder if the photo of my grandmother was taken as they left for their honeymoon.

Top left corner

I used Chromatics Cardstock CS53 – Rose and CS67 Camel for the various frames and also the flowers.

The pink ribbon was from my stash. The silhouette head is from the Heritage Cricut Cart and the Bling in the centre of the flowers is from the Bella! Wedding Collection – Pink Rhinestone with silver rim. (Links below to all products used.)

The flower is cut using the George & Basic Shapes Cricut Cartridge.

The heart frame cut from A5 Cream Cardstock  for the title is from the Wild Rose Studio Die Collection –

Ornate Heart.

I printed the words on to vellum and then attached as below.

The Oval Frame Die is also from the Wild Rose Studio Collection.

The pink ribbon with the pearls is actually part of the background page pattern.

I printed my journaling on Vellum to retain the background paper and placed it on the page using a very thin double side paper often called Jac Paper

(thinner than the normal Jac paper) and invisible behind the vellum.

This flower is also cut from the George and Basic Shapes Cricut Cart and was the same shape as the one at the top of the photo but this time I wet the flower pieces and then gently prised them apart so that I had two layers for the petals. I scrunched and bent to get the desired affect. I added a little touch of glitter.

Using Peel Off Transfer Sheets

I could do a video and show you how I used these sheets but Els from Elizabeth Crafts Designs has already done that and it is such a simple video to watch, there is no way I could do it any better. So check that out here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4iRNfCCwyo

This black ornament sheet shows some Peel Offs not removed, some Peel Offs removed and some spaces where I have cut out the Peel Off to transfer the negative to my project.

Black Ornament Sheet - in a variation of stages

Black Ornament Sheet – in a variation of stages

When you look at this sheet and see the pieces remaining after I have pulled off the Peel off to make my cards (see below for an example), a negative is left behind. Previously I might have used pieces of these black bits for little bits of embellishments but using the transfer sheet you can transfer these negatives as a whole and get a whole new creation. An example……….

Negatives transferred to my cardstock.

This card shows the ornament as we would normally use it, depending on how or what you place it on.

These are very simple and easy to use and Els’ video on You Tube give a great demonstration which makes the process seamless. Have a try!!

Both gold colour backgrounds are from the back of the Christmas Fantail paper and depending on where you cut the piece fom you get a different variation of colour.

Using the Match It Peel Offs

I decided to have a play with the new Match It Peel Off stickers from Doodey. In the pack you get a Peel Off sheet and a background sheet and it is just a case of Peeling the stickers off and placing them over the appropriate background. You just trim around the Peel off – not too inticate so easy to do. Then it is up to you to design your card to place these designs on. As you will see I have used the Old Timers Cars – Vintage and Classic and the Sailing Pack.

So – turn this

into – this……..

Magnetic Die Cutting Book

I have created this book to hold my metal dies. Because I have a Cricut machine I have resisted the temptation to purchase large nmbers of these dies as I do find that the Cricut Machine gives me a wider range of choices – ie size and styles.

The dies I have purchased have been sitting in their plastic bags for the past wee while and it has been a pain to sort through the bags and find exactly what I am looking for apart from the fact that I have had to replace the bags as they fell apart.

Some of the ladies at one of the Craft groups I attend have been keepng their dies in DVD cases and by adding the magnet sheets they are finding that it works well for them.

I didn`t have spare DVD cases sitting around and I did not want to go out and purchase any and so I checked You Tube to see how others were storing their dies. The book I have created below is one idea I saw on numerous channels.

I have used A5 Chipboard and A5 cardstock as the base of the card and before putting it all together I covered the chipboard covers and cardstock pages with the Summerhouse range of papers, getting two pieces of A5 from each sheet.

I also decided it was worthwhile making note of the number of dies in each set as when they are being used it is so easy to pop something in the rubbish pile by mistake. I also read of a great Tip on You Tube that it pays to write down how the dies work with your own machine and also any other machines you might use with your dies – ie Do you need to shim (add extra packing) to get a clean cut etc. Where is the best place on the mat to cut if you are using edging dies etc.

You will see from the photos, that I typed up a table and put that on the left hand side pages as I worked through the book. This allows me to put in the name and number of dies I expect to have on the opposite page and any comments I want to add.

Now for some photos.

Front Cover - I used a 1.25 O ring to bind - this allow for the book to expand as I add more dies. A 1`` would also work fine.

1st inside pages

Insert on Left hand side

I see this photo is a bit blurry and I will replace it as soon as I get a chance.

2nd pages

3rd pages

You get the idea! I put 10 pages in my book – not including the covers

Now the back cover.

Back Cover

I used:
Magnet sheets

Summerhouse papers
(These are Buy One get One Free at the moment)

White Card

Chipboard
(This is not a solid chipboard – more like a compressed cardboard – slightly flexible)

Double sided tape

If you do not want to make a book up or do not have sufficiet supplies, please feel free to contact me and I will give you a quote to make up a book using your paper choices. I would not recommend any more than 10 pages plus back and front covers as your book will become too thick.
The 1inch O rings are white.

I am also happy to quote for a base book
ie. Front and back covers and white cardstock pages (all bound) for you to cover or embellish yourself.

You also have the option of the 6 rings as shown or binding along the whole edge.

Christmas Card Idea

This very cute folded card idea was shown to me by my sister after she was shown by a friend. It was the first time I had seen this particular style and thought you might appreciate playing around with something different. Love to see what you create so feel free to email a photo of your completed card.

Double Folded Card by Lynette

Trim a second piece of A5 side card to 7.5cm wide and score and fold at half way point.

Inside Card

Cut a piece of patterned paper 13cm x 10cm for the inside of the card. Adhere with double sided tape.

Inside patterned backing

Cut a piece of patterned paper 10cm x 6.5cm and adhere to the front of the card.

Patterned Front

Adhere a patterned piece of paper to your front small half folded card as shown.

Outside small card

Cut 2 pieces 10cm x 7.5cm and adhere to the inside of the smaller half folded card.

Inside small card

Adhere the smaller card to the inside of the larger card as shown.

Small Card attached to larger card

Cut a plain piece of card to fit as desired to use as an insert  – stamp a sentiment of your choice or print up a sentiment on your computer. Adhere this to the left hand side of your inside small half folded card.

Insert and flourish

Embellish your card as you wish. If you use an accent and wish to have your card close, pop the embellishment up with a foam strip and tuck the small card front under to close.

I haven’t added patterned paper to the left inside of the larger card, just added a flourish but you could also add patterned paper here or use to write an additional message.

Embossed Christmas Candle with inked embossing folder

I needed some inspiration and so I jumped on the web to get some embossing card ideas and came across a card made using an embossing folder and an ink pad. I remembered doing some years ago when I first purchased my Cuttlebug and so dug out my brayer.

I had a play and not only was I happy with the outcome but so were the ladies who came to get ‘Crafty” the next day. After having it on display yesterday at another Craft Group I received many queries as to how it was done. Fortunately the supplies were there already for the ladies to also “Play”.

So, the card………..

The completed card, ready for my sentiments or not! Haven't decided yet. Maybe I will leave that for the inside of the card.

Instructions

Cut a piece of cardstock the same size as your embossing folder. At least big enough to cover the design area you wish to emboss.

Ready to start.

Choose the ink pad of your choice. I used an Adirondack Ink Pad called Wildflower. It is quite an old stamp pad and has had plenty of use and so the colours are not as fresh as they once were but it did what I wanted.

A tip – Store your inkpads upside down to stop all the ink dropping to the bottom and drying out.

Open your embossing folder with the flat side (not the bumpy side) of the folder on a piece of paper on your table top.

Ink up your brayer. If you don’t have one, you can rub your stamp pad over the embossing folder.

Ink up your brayer.

Using a brayer – Ink the flat inside of your embossing folder. I kept a top to bottom, bottom to top action, rather than inking all over as I was using a multicoloured ink pad.
Using your stamp pad only – pat it all over  the area that you wish inked. You may want to do a couple of layers across to ensure you have enough ink.

Inked folder.

You will never get two inked embossed pieces the same – play around wth it. Do you like a darker look, or a softer one. Do you like multi coloured or plain. All to your taste.

Take the piece of card you want embossed and stand it against the other part of the embossing folder and then close the folder.

Card inside the folder.

Put it through your embossing machine and then…………………gasp. That looks so cool.

Attach to your card and embellish as you wish.

Completed card - well almost. I can't decide yet if I will add a sentiment to the outside or not - maybe not. You could also add some subtle bling to the holly berries if you wish.

Waterlily Flower Tutorial

This is such a simple flower to create and can look so stunning no matter what colours or papers you choose.

Waterlily

I have a Cricut machine and so for me it is quite a simple thing to just put in the cartridge, choose my pattern choice and press Cut!

But of course not every one has one of these and so I will give you a couple of options for creating a flower similar to  this.
(See below for my offer to send you a cardboard Cricut template if you live in New Zealand)

Using the template

Depending on the size flower you want cut 3 or 4 different size flower shapes.

Petal Template

Score through each flower as shown.

Score lines

Bend slightly along score lines to add dimension.

At this point before assembling your flower you could run a line of PVA or similar glue around the edge of your petals and dip them in a fine glitter.

Layering up

Lay your petals on top of each other as shown. Glue them together as you go either with a glue dot, Double sided tape or your favourite glue.

I have shown here a variety of centre piece options and will show you how each one looks as it is completed.

Centre piece options

Attach a pair of tweezers to the outer edge of your spiral as shown and begin to wind the spiral around the tweezers.

Start at the outer edge.

and begin to roll

Slip the spiral off the tweezers and let the spiral spring free if you want a looser look or hold the spiral between your fingers as you slide it off the tweezers and hold in place until you have glued. It depends on the look you want. Once you have it how you like it glue the end of the spiral to the bottom of the spiral as shown.

Still rolled fairly tight.

Loose spiral

Underside of the spiral - add enough glue so that the layers in the spiral don't bounce out.

Circle spiral before shaping is hand cut. Of course yours will look neater than mine. I did this quickly so that I could complete this today.

Circle spiral handcut - this also looks great on it's own with a few small leaves

Scalloped spiral hand cut - I removed the length that didn't have a scalloped edge.

In this one I have left the unscalloped edge.

At this stage you could also put a blob of glue in the centre of the spiral and pour over a little glitter. It’s all about your taste  so you get to choose!

Attach the spiral to your petals with a glue dot or some other strong adhesive.

A completed look.

and another

and another!

I’ve added a couple of option of leaves that you can attach under your flower.

Lily pad

Two more varieties

You can add veins to your leaves, ink the edges, or use patterned paper.

Inked edges and my quick attempt at veins.

A little tip – I wanted to add ink down the centre of the leaf  but wasn`t sure how I could get a neat line and then I thought ………what if I fold the leaf back in the opposite direction and ink the edge as if on the side of a card, and it worked! Seems you are never to old to learn new tricks.

Now before I talk about another way of creating this flower, here is my offer.

Email me if you would like the templates (I’ll learn how to do that direct off the BLOG soon!) My email address is forcarolyn@gmail.com

or send me a stamped addressed envelope and I will post you back a cardboard template cut outs that you will be able to trace around. (I can’t cut the lily pad as that wasn’t a cut from the machine, just a drawing – but I can email it.)

OR if you live in Christchurch, call me and arrange a time to drop by and I will cut these for you.

Using heart Cut Outs or Punches.

Various heart sizes

Now I haven’t tried this yet but I cannot see why it won’t work and shortly I will try it myself and add photos

Cut 6 heart shapes of the same size for each petal layer.

Cut a circle base to glue your largest size on.

Starting with your biggest hearts arrange them around the circle after scoring and folding (and glittering) in the same way as if they were all attached.
It will not matter if they overlap slightly.

The first time you try this, don’t glue them down until you have had a good play around at putting down a first, second and third layer.

Once you are happy with the look, glue your petals down.

Make the spiral centre piece as you would for the flower above.

Adjusting how wide you hand cut the spiral will determine the height of the spiral. It will also determine how dense the spiral will be.

Cut your leaves as above.

If you get one completed before I have an attempt, email me your photo and I will add it here and also to our monthly competition.

BIG apologies for the photo quality with these. It’s an awful day here in Christchurch and I was loosing light faster than I could photograph.

Have fun playing!!

OK—– so another brain wave, just after I published this and was reading through it one last time I thought…………..why not cut the circle or the scalloped spiral using decal, scallop, pinking shears or other fancy edge scissors. How simple is that!!!

October 19, 2011

So, so simple!!

Just taking one piece from the Vintage Lamp packet it took less than 10 minutes to create this card!

The completed card - Vintage Lamp

I took an A5 size piece of card stock and folded it long ways.

Cut a piece of  Christmas red Cardstock to fit, leaving a white border edge if you wish.

To add that little extra, trim one side with decal edge scissors – you may have another favourite style!

Attach the red card to the white card front with Double Sided tape.

Shows front and back of the card

Add a strip of Gold or Silver Peel Off to the left hand side of the card front.

Use foam tape to add dimension when adherring your Vintage Lamp topper.

Add a Peel Off or Vellum sentiment.

(If you are like me and don’t measure your fold exactly down the middle of the card, no problem!! Just add a strip of the same red card stock to the right inside edge of your card. Shhh, no one will you know that you hadn’t planned it that way in the first place.)

Easel Card with handmade flower

The completed card standing.

This is a very simple style of card that you can make quite quickly and is very effective. The products and tools I used will be listed as I go through the instructions.

I used an A5 size card for this one but you can use any size card, including square cards for a different size. I’ll call this the base card.

Packet of white cardstock A5 size – http://www.cardandscrapbookingsupplies.co.nz/product_info.php?products_id=2061

Score and fold your base card as shown below at the half way point and then at the ¾ point. I use a bone folder to flatten my edges for a shape fold. If you don’t use a scoring tool you can just fold your card in half, then fold one half in half again.

Score lines.

Folded on score lines.

Cut a piece of cardstock in the colour of your choice half the size of your base card. This is your backing card.

If you wish to ink the edges of the backing card now is a good time to do this. If you have never done this before, check out ‘how to’ in the Question and Answer Category.

Backing card cut to size

Inked edges

Cut an insert card. I have used a piece of card from the DCWV Sweet stack and cut it to fit how I wanted. You may prefer just a small border around the edge and therefore you would cut your insert card bigger. You can ink this also before attaching if you wish. I chose this piece of DCWV because it had a wavey water affect and if you used your imagination the waves can also look like a school of fish swimming.

Attach the insert card to your backing card with double sided (DS) tape.

Double sided (DS) tape – http://www.cardandscrapbookingsupplies.co.nz/product_info.php?products_id=1342

Insert added to backing card

Put tape around the card where shown below.

Taped ready for Backing card

Peel off the tape and attach your backing card. The top of the backing card now swings free from the card.

Attached front view

Attached side view

Open the card as below and make a stand for your easel backing card to stand against.

Add yout easel stand

I cut a piece of the same cardstock as I used for the backing card and attached this with DS tape. I then cut a piece of the DCWV paper from the left over piece of my insert and threaded this through a buckle. I then ran a piece of DS tape along the back of my buckle strip and pressed this onto my pink cardstock as shown.

Buckles – Square, Round, Hearts http://www.cardandscrapbookingsupplies.co.nz/product_info.php?products_id=1361

Embellish the front of your card as you wish.

Almost completed.

I typed up a sentiment onto vellum and printed this off and attached with vellum adhesive.
I like to have sentiments pre done as they are there ready when I want to put a card together quickly. If you would like a specialised free template completed and emailed to you, let me know what you would like on this and I will send one through that you can print off OR you can tell me what you want on it and I will print on either vellum or paper (your choice) and charge you the same as I would for the sentiment sheets below.

The completed card standing.

The completed card closed.

What would I do differently?
I would either add a small pearl or some glitter to the centre of the flower
I would consider edging the flower with a neutral colour glitter
I would look for a water lily style leaf cut on my Cricut machine

I will do a tutorial for the flower soon!

NZ customers – the first three people to say in the Comment box that they would like me to send them three flowers (as above – differing sizes), I will contact you about your colour choice, cut these and send them ready for you to assemble – it’s easy!!
